Vipassana-A BUDDHIST form of insight MEDITATION based on internal observation and perception of your state of mind, and any sensations that are present. It is a very intense form of meditation, and goes on for several hours a day for several days. Current Vipassana retreats feature 10- day sessions of a prolonged and difficult path, but the rewards are significant.
Virtues-Exceptional moral standards. Examples that are usually listed are: faith, hope, justice, prudence (or cautiousness), charity, self-control, and courage.
Vishnu-A major God in HINDUISM, the preserver of the universe. Various descriptions of Vishnu describe him as a lesser rank within the HINDU gods, who was gradually raised in rank through incarnations.
Vision-A mental image or concept produced by the MIND'S EYE.
Visionary-A PSYCHIC, SEER, CLAIRVOYANT, or MYSTIC. A person who is able to see beyond the ordinary life experiences with unusual PERCEPTION.
Vision Quest-An ancient practice in which the SEEKER embarks on a what might be called a rite of passage (many times a male at puberty) whereby the participant deliberately enters an ordeal of self-discovery that is to show him (or her) what the true path in life is for them. It usually involves purification of some sort, and then spending a number of days in a SARED, secluded place without food, water or sleep, and is accompanied by prayers of some sort to help in the ILLUMINATION.
Visualization-Seeing something with the MIND'S EYE, or seeing something with mental pictures, which can be called up at will. Usually used for a purpose of achievement of one kind or another, whether it is fame, happiness, riches, possessions, etc. Also can be used for both inner exploration or for external purposes. Compare with IMAGERY.
