Chapter 7

When Tom got to school, the first person he saw was his best friend Mitch. Mitch suspected something wasn't right, because there had been other times that Tom had come to school looking like he had been in a fight.

"Man, what happened to you? You got one heck of a shiner," Mitch asked.

"It ain't nothin."

"Come on, Tom, something is going on and you're going to tell me. Who in the world do you keep fighting with? Is it that big bully Billy?"

"No, it's not Billy. Don't worry about it."

"Man, I'm your friend. You can tell me."

"If you have to know, it's my dad. He's a drunk and when he comes home at night he is not very nice." Tom had to work hard to hold back the tears.

There was a bit of silence. Mitch didn't know what to say. He never heard of a dad that would hurt his son like that. Mitch couldn't imagine our dad ever doing anything like that to him or me.

Finally Tom said, "I know you can't believe it, can you?"

"No, it's not that. It's just hard for me to think that a dad would hurt his kid."

"It's not his fault. He just drinks too much and he doesn't know what he's doing."

"Tom, it's his fault that he drinks too much!"

"Never mind, I shouldn't have told you. You couldn't understand."

"I'm glad you did. Can you come and stay with us? Hey, I could have you come over for an all-nighter tomorrow night. It will be Friday and we can stay up late. You haven't spent the night for a long time. I'll check with Mom."
