Chapter 5

Asako knew all that. She also knew that this was just the beginning -- solving the case was something much more difficult. Moreover, the cops probably had not walked the scene in detail since the determination had been made to turn the lead over to the FBI.

She stopped from time to time and with her chop sticks picked up a piece of paper, thread, or some other evidence and bag it, hoping that subsequent analysis in the crime lab would eventually make some sense out of it all and lead to the identity of the killer or killers. She then turned to examine the body.

"Frontal lividity on face, chest and stomach indicates the body was originally face down and then moved to its present position," dictated Asako for the benefit of the video cam. "No obvious signs of struggle. The woman was shot execution style in the back of the head. There were two shots but no exit wounds. The bullets are probably soft-nose hollow points and still lodged in the brain. We need them for analysis. Blood spatter is consistent with lividity. That and the powder tattoos indicate she was probably kneeling, face down." One of the victim's hands was closed in a tight fist. Asako pried it open. "Grass and leaves clutched by the victim show a typical cadaveric spasm."

"This girl went through hell," commented Joe almost in a whisper.
