The doctor began to check her arms and legs, asking her to move them up or down and sideways. Her right wrist hurt a little when he asked her to rotate it to the right. "I'm ordering x-rays of your arm to see what is going on there. I'm hoping it is just a sprain, but it could be a fracture. I'll see you again once the x-rays come back." He then took Victoria's hand in his and said "she's going to be fine, don't worry. We're going to take good care of her." The doctor left the room and headed toward the main desk. Shannon wondered when Dan would be brought in. He couldn't have been that far behind them since the second ambulance from the accident scene was arriving just as hers had been leaving.
A few minutes later a nurse appeared in Shannon's doorway and announced that she was taking her to x-ray. "I'll have her back soon, one of you can come if you want," she said. Brendan said he would stay in the room and he stared at the small white television set supported by a metal bar from the ceiling. Brendan couldn't believe that this was happening to his family twice in one week. The first attack could have been a crime of opportunity; there were so many people in the square during the homecoming parade and Halloween celebration. He was sure he had locked the front door that evening, but someone could have opened that door with an old skeleton key. He would have to make sure to change that old antique lock to a newer one with a dead bolt first thing in the morning.
