Chapter 6

RP1 sat on the little bench in the garden and waited. The high fence around the garden was nearly as tall as the two young trees and certainly taller than the bushes. It was white and sterile, as was the main laboratory building. He didn't know it was a laboratory, of course. He just knew it as home. It was the only home he had known for twenty-one years. Everyone called it the Center.

The garden, while small, had lots of plants and flowers. He found it peaceful. It was a good place to wait, even though it was well past midnight and all the lights were off. He looked up and saw a patch of open sky. Some stars were peeking out around the clouds now as if to announce that the day's thunderstorms were over.

RP1 knew that out there people were beginning to explore the solar system. More close to home, a new section was being added to the International Space Station, or so he had heard. Someday I'll be out there. It was a relaxing moment away from his training. The Center was part of a special NASA program, so there were classes and training sessions every day, including all sorts of physical exercise and endurance tests. Under the watchful eye of their tutors, they all prepared for one of mankind's greatest adventures, a trip to the nearest star system. To avoid distractions from the outside world, the Center was patrolled by a well trained security force. The future astronauts and the other Center personnel - doctors, nurses, scientists, and engineers -- called them the Guardians.
