Chapter 7

As she crawled into a booth on the main floor across from Dolores, Jay studied her friend. Roger, the cop, had unfortunately been called to get a cat out of a tree, so he had been left behind in St. Mary's. Jay had mixed emotions about not having him with her. Good looking guy, though this is probably not the time to flirt with the gendarmes anyway. Dolores had been putting on a little weight. Hippiness was in her family, so she was fighting against genetics. The flat-chested teenager with the devilish glint in her eye had given way to a serious, mature woman who was sure of her place in the world and the goals in her life. At least, she had been, until her husband's murder.

She and John Milton never had children, although Jay knew they had tried. Neither had wanted to go the route of fertility pills or artificial insemination, even though both were commonplace for couples who wanted a baby. They also had avoided the bureaucratic nightmare of adoption, having neither the time nor the money to hire an adoption lawyer. Their baby had turned out to be Henry, a large golden retriever, who happily slobbered around the big, rambling house the couple owned.

"Are you calmer now, amorcita?"

The question seemed to break the dam to a flood of tears. Jay was surprised that her friend still had some left. On the other hand, for a woman that had just lost her soul mate, Dolores was holding up well.
