Chapter 4

"Welcome back," said Harry Carson, one of the veterans. "Quite a party you had last night. How's the leg?"

Harry was a beefy individual that always seemed to be on some kind of diet, yet he had a good heart. He was nearly bald, his black pate doing an acceptable job of reflecting some of the feeble light from the dirty fluorescent bulbs. An ugly scar started just in front of his right ear and ended at the tip of his chin, a grim reminder to all that a knife could be as deadly as a gun. The odd thing was that Harry could have had it removed via plastic surgery, since he was grand-fathered into the old medical coverage, which was more generous than the current one.

"Still bandaged, stiff, and sore. My head is spinning from the pain killers. Can you believe they gave me less than a day in the hospital?"

"The wonders of modern medicine. You're lucky you didn't need a kidney or some other critical body part. Then you'd be put on a waiting list, where you'd wait maybe a year or more, unless you died first or you could afford to buy one on the black market. Your medical benefits probably wouldn't cover the operation anyway, since you weren't on duty." That was a lot coming from Harry, who usually didn't have much to say to anyone. Chris wondered if the old guy liked him. "Yeah, lucky, lucky. By the way, Denise wants to see you."
