A week went by and the only connection Karen had to the man who had been her constant companion for the past two months were the reports that would appear daily on the front page of her newspapers entertainment section. The next morning a call from the international operator woke her with a start. Fumbling in the darkness for the receiver she listened to a voice command her to keep the line free, when a connection became available the call would be placed. Karen sat in bed staring alternately at the clock whose red numbers accused her of being awake at 4 a.m., and the phone that sat obstinately silent by the side of the bed.
