Houses

So, that explained the perfect lawn. Must be an apartment dweller, wishing for a garden of his or her own, who had decided this duty was nearly as good. I couldn't believe she knew all about this house. I would hate having her as an opposing attorney, if I ever went to court, I thought to myself.

"Don't worry, no one's here. Come on, let's look around," she said, leading the way, peeking into the windows. As we rounded the corner, I noticed that the backyard was also perfect. This blue Cape Cod was a dream in itself, I thought to myself.

"Like it?" Colleen asked. I grinned, nodded, and we giggled like school children.

Of course, when we ambled around the corner, checking out the backyard, we startled someone, who was probably the rented gardener. The old lady put her hands to her face and looked as if she had seen a ghost.

"Oops," Colleen said, as we hurried to the car.

While we had an innocent-enough reason to visit the home, I think we both suddenly became a little shy.

Colleen quickly started the car-wordlessly, as if in a hurry to leave. She backed up quickly, nearly hitting the "For Sale" sign.

"What are you thinking," she asked, when I was quiet for a few minutes, reflecting on our house visit.

"I think if I ever get a house, I'm going to hire that gardener," I said, then added as an afterthought, "That is, if she survives being startled by two ghosts."
