Marie turned back to Steve. "You said I am still in danger."
Steve nodded.
"Well?" She was in no mood for pulling the information out of him.
Steve's shoulders dropped and he reached across the table, but Marie withdrew her hand from his reach. "If I try really hard, could you consider giving me another chance?"
"Steve!"
"I just need to know."
Marie jumped to her feet with enough force to draw the attention of several guards standing by the doorway. She grabbed her purse. This was getting nowhere. What a dirty trick to pull just to get her there.
"Okay. Wait. It's Cynthia and Bill."
Marie stood alongside the table glaring at the man she'd once felt protected by, and searched for signs of more tricks. Every muscle in her back seized with anger at the mention of the two people in the world she wanted less to do with than Steve. "What about them?"
"They have this slick shark lawyer."
Marie shook her head to clear her thoughts. "They're here?" She saw the surprise flash in Steve's eyes. "Don't look so surprised. I didn't know you were here either until I got your letter."
"Where do you live, under a rock?"
Marie decided not to go into the car ordeal or any of the rest. Why give him the satisfaction? Her mood did lighten some at the thought of Cynthia in orange. It would almost be worth standing in that wretched line again to see her brought into this room to face her.
