Chapter 19

Transitions and Permanency

A Constant Changing World

For the majority of foster care, the placement is not long term. This creates both opportunities and challenges.

The window of opportunity to change behavior is usually very small and does take a task force of professionals.

Areas of focus:

  • Verbal Expression
  • Choice of Activity
  • Sense of Personal Responsibility
  • Respect to Peers and Elders
  • Power Struggles
  • Propensity to Fight

It is an ongoing challenge to address the problem or avoid the problem. On the other hand, it is also ongoing monitoring:

  • Control vs. Freedom
  • Avoid or React
  • Agree or Disagree
