If I don't respond quickly to a situation, then it loses its immediacy and greatest impact. Also, if the punishment is over too long a period of time, the children have a tendency to minimize it and readjust and from experience a bigger problem can arise.

Being in tune with each other seems to be the best approach. Agreeing or explaining why you don't agree. Reasonable authority should always rule; and sometimes that may mean temporarily removing them from the home and using a respite situation for the day or a few days. This has worked for us.
