Important Websites

More and more information is becoming available on the web. Some written by foster children, some government and association websites and some through broadcast media. Here are a few:

  • www.pbs.org/wnet/agingout Aging Out - a documentary the chronicles the daunting obstacles veterans of foster care encounter.
  • www.fyi3.com Primarily for teens and those aging out of foster care. Has information, advice, interactive features and a useful glossary of foster care terms.
  • www.youthcomm.org A publisher of Represent, a monthly magazine for youth in care, written and edited by youth.
  • www.fosteryouthhelp.ca.gov Foster Care Ombudsman - provides an avenue for foster youth to file complaints regarding their placement, care and services without fear of retribution. (Check various states through website search.)
  • National Foster Youth Advisory Council (NFYAC). A diverse national group of current and foster youth and adult supporters from several states who have direct experience with the child welfare systems. The Council's purpose is to provide a voice for and make a difference in the lives of youth currently in care and support successful transitions into adult-hood.
  • Mockingbird Society - an independent, non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the safety, quality of life and future of the children and adolescents living in foster care/group home system nationwide.
  • Foster Club for Adults - for adults involved in the foster care system; those who care for children and caseworkers. You will find information and inspiration on how to work and communicate with foster youth.
  • Department of Social Services in each state (for information and regulations).
  • Foster Care Ombudsman
  • California Youth Connection - publisher of books written by youth.
