Sean was taking up more than his share of the back seat and was not about to more over, but Juliana had no intention of showing any discomfort.
"It sure is a brisk cool evening," Juliana said loudly, knowing that the cold was something she would have to get used to. Her Caribbean home was beautiful and warm, but now she could only see darkness and feel the chill of the Alaskan night, as well as that of her partner. She began to think that maybe her acceptance of this assignment - intended to expose the worldwide criminal activities of Arctic Sunset Cruiseline - might have been too hasty.
Sean ignored Juliana's comment about the weather, but the cab driver politely answered as he stored the luggage: "Nights like these were meant to clear one's mind and bring two souls together." Juliana and Sean both thought the response was a bit unusual. As the driver entered the cab, Juliana noticed that he was part Native American. She was well aware of the numerous tribes in Alaska and recalled her own experiences with native tribes in Puerto Rico. She remembered the time when her grandmother told her that she had some native blood, but Juliana had never gotten any specifics about her native ancestors. She did recall that for years natives had worked on her father's estate. At times, several had participated in her care when she was young. It was then that she had heard chants uttered in a similar poetic and mystical style. Remembering made Juliana feel more comfortable with the driver.
