Chapter 4 : Page 5 of 7

They both get hired at the Central Telephone Company and are introduced to the work of Thomas Edison.

After hours, they often took walks in the park close by.

Without any warning, Nikola waves his arms in the air and sways his body reciting the lines of Goethe. Mothers watching their children stare at him. A few children notice him and watch with fascination.

"The glow retreats, done is the day of toil,

It yonder hastes, new fields of life exploring;

Ah, that no wing can lift me from the soil,

Upon its track to follow.. follow soaring!"

Suddenly Nikola's animated figure snaps with a rigid pose as if he has fallen into a trance.

Szigrati speaks to him but he gets no answer. "Nikola, can you hear me?"

Nikola ignores Szigrati's words. He is about to seize him and shake him.

Nikola excitedly blurts out the words "Watch me! Watch me reverse it if I can get a magnetic field to rotate! That's all it would take - inducing rotation in a magnetic field!" He gazes into the sun. They both continue walking with a spring in their step.

Pointing to a nearby bench, Szigrati says, "Let's sit and rest for awhile".

Nikola again frozen in space. He's almost in a trance.

"Nikola, are you ill?" asked Szigrati.

Calmly responding, "It's right here before me. My alternating current motor. I have solved the problem". Now excited, he asks, "Don't you see it? See how smoothly it is running? Now I throw the switch -- I reverse it. See! It goes just as smooth in the opposite direction. Watch! I stop it! I start it! There is no speaking. There's nothing to spark."
