Chapter 31 - Page 1 of 7

Near Burlington, Vermont, January, 2078, Monday…

Frank Suarez usually worked alone. He was therefore not pleased when he got his next marching orders.

"You may need the help," said the gravelly voice. "Jerry and Sam can cover your butt. I don't want a slip-up."

"When have I ever screwed up?"

"There are two of them up there. And I want you to go over the house thoroughly. With a fine tooth comb."

"Skip the clichés, asshole. They might be able to identify us, then. We're not doing the ski mask thing, you know, even though it might be appropriate for that icebox we're driving into."

"I think you know what to do about all that, don't you?"

Frank frowned. The gravelly voice almost never wanted witnesses. It seemed to be an automatic reaction for the man on the other end of the line.

I guess some would call it job security. Anyone living has to make choices. If we are satisfied with our lives at the end we can look back and say that given the same circumstances we would make the same choices. However, while all men are created equal, not everyone has equal opportunities. Those presented to you always have a random component even if many are determined by the initial conditions of where you are born, who your parents are, and so forth. Einstein's special relativity would give a world line to each person that is causal and deterministic. In the quantum mechanics of life, that world line is not deterministic. At every instant choices made will take the world line off in another direction.
