The Ancient Greek Vision

A small, dark storm cloud moved over the sun, and Demeter tensed. She knew something was going to happen. She called her daughter. "Persephone, it's time to leave." Demeter began gathering up their shoes.

"Aww, but..." was all that escaped Persephone's lips before she was dragged down to the underworld.

"Persephone!" Demeter screamed maniacally. Even though she didn't see the abduction, she knew what had happened. Demeter knew she must pay a visit to Zeus.

"Persephone's been abducted." Demeter spoke to Zeus.

At once, Zeus went to pool of crystal-clear water, wanting to know more. "Show me my daughter."

The water responded immediately with an image of Persephone being held captive by Hades, the ruler of the underworld. Demeter glanced over Zeus' shoulder. "Get her back!" She begged.

The king of the heavens responded with, "I can't do that."

"Why not?"

"Because he took her. She is rightfully his now."

Demeter began to sob. As she did, giant drops of rain poured down and a huge thunder shook the earth.

"Well, Demeter, don't cry. I can try to bargain with him."

Demeter's tears lessened and she looked up at Zeus. "Please."

Zeus nodded, stepped into his chariot, and began the journey to the underworld.

"Hades." Zeus greeted him.

"Zeus."

"Listen, give Persephone back to us."
