This tale takes place in Central City, up near Golden Colorado.
Up on the side of a hill just off Hwy.119 are several old cemeteries. One of these, the Masonic has an event that happens twice a year, on November 1st and April 5. A woman in a black satin gown appears, carrying a fresh bouquet of Columbines, she places these flowers on the grave of one John Edward Cameron, a youngster that died Nov. 1st 1887 of "heart paralysis.
Town residents often seen her on these dates and had no idea who she was and by 1899 she was well known as a phantom. That year, well over a dozen people gathered at the cemetery, sure enough, around sunset the woman appeared. While she was laying the flowers on the grave, two men tried to capture her, but she just disappeared into thin air.
Since that time, many have tried to capture her, but she always vanishes. This is one that I am going to have to take a trip up to Central City and see for myself!
There is a place in the southwest corner of Colorado Springs called Helen Hunt Falls. In the 19th Century Helen Hunt Jackson was an author and a Native American activist and this is who the falls are named after. Due to the treacherous area around the falls, many people have died here, and average of 5 per year. As you walk or drive through the tunnel, you may see any number of phantoms. I wouldn't pick up hitchhikers here....
