Anna noticed Thomas folding the extra plaid. "May I have that? "
"Of course, Milady."
She lifted her leg and he understood what she wanted. He folded the plaid even smaller and slipped it under her knee. Thomas knew her skirt would fly up in the wind, so he tucked it under her other knee. Then he stood back and returned her attempted smile. His heart was breaking for her.
Kevin's arm was around her waist again, but it was too high, so she moved his hand down toward her hip. Then she touched the piece of plaid over his shoulder and looked up at him.
He glanced down at the rope burn on the arm she had next to him. "Does it hurt you?" When she nodded, he pulled the cloth out of his belt, tossed it over his shoulder and opened his shirt.
Satisfied, she wrapped her arms around his upper arm and leaned farther forward so she wouldn't swallow so much blood. The one thing she couldn't do anything about was the inside of her mouth. The cut went all the way from her lip to the back of her jaw. It was swollen on the inside too and each up and down movement made her teeth go into the cut again. Keeping her teeth clenched hurt her jaw. There was simply nothing she could do about it. The last thing she did was put her head on his bare chest, making sure she could hear his heart again. Then she closed her eyes and relaxed.
