Pyncheon House, a 19th-century New England mansion, is beset with problems. Accusations of witchcraft are in the air, and a relative is soon to return from prison. But here comes the country cousin Phoebe, to raise their spirits and embark on a romance with the mysterious lodger Holgrave.
