Chapter 19

Student Art Show

Kate couldn't remember the fight but Gina was mad at her. She figured that by keeping the painting, she would make the others upset. But, she didn't realize they would stop talking to her.

Maybe she should just do it. It would be over in one, simple cut. She had learned from the painting. She could paint it again. Maybe it wouldn't be as perfect as before but if she really wanted to, she could paint it again.

The substitute was still there. She wondered how Mrs. Sanderson was. She probably hadn't gotten over the shock of finding the famous art subjects standing in her classroom like students.

He was whistling as he used the cutter to cut up pieces of manila art paper. She took a scissors and made her way to her painting, which was sitting proudly on an easel. The substitute had been so proud of it; he showed it to the principal. The principal's compliments felt nice to her but she didn't understand the painting like Kate did.

When she came to the easel it was empty.

"Hey, where's my painting?" said Kate.

The substitute stopped cutting, and looked up. "Oh, hi Kate. The principal liked it so much that he wants to add it to the student art show. They already selected the work but he insisted they find a place for it."

"Oh," was all Kate could say. This was not good news. She had no idea where her painting was and how could she destroy it when it was hanging so proudly in the mall.

Kate wished she had done what her friends had been pushing her to do earlier. Now she had no choice. She had to steal her painting back.
