When Kate walked into school, she could hear the buzz of gossip circulating. What the gossip was, she didn't know or care. She didn't like gossip. People talking about each other didn't ever seem right to her. She ignored the noises of school and went right to the art room, where she found Will.
"I can't believe this!" said Will. As usual, he was the first one there. He was always on time. It was a little annoying to Kate as she was always a few minutes late. Somehow, that always made her feel mad at Will, like it was his fault or something.
"What?" Kate asked, wondering what the problem was. Everything seemed like it was a big deal to Will. Last week, Will was all upset because they painted the cafeteria and they had to eat in their classroom. Who cared? They still got lunch, only the teacher became impatient with them because they were nosier and messier than she was used to.
Will was still standing at the door. Kate pushed him aside and went in. She couldn't believe what she saw. The art room was a mess! Tables and chairs were overturned, Kate's painting had been ripped and Gina's painting had been tossed across the room. She stood there, shocked. "How could someone do this?" She asked Will. She didn't expect Will to have an answer. She could never have an answer herself.
How could someone destroy their paintings and mess up their art room? After all, this wasn't just a school classroom. This was a place where they created things. They were a small, close-knit group. The principal had tried to get rid of the advanced art class because so few students were taking the class. But, the teacher and kids worked hard to prove themselves. After Gina had won a state award, the principal let them be, and through this struggle they became good friends.
