Chapter 2

Elisa and Conner did not notice Ashlyn's approach; they were too caught up with one another. Feeling they'd prefer a bit more time alone, Ashlyn intentionally departed as inconspicuously as she arrived.

She did not return to Myron's tent - they had agreed to meet up that evening and she did not wish to impose prior - but rather continued perusing the various booths for interesting artifacts. Her mind continually averted back to the stories she had heard of the Sunless Isle, however, so she had difficulty paying any real attention to the merchants and their goods. After a while, she abandoned that venture and wandered aimlessly for a bit until she found a rather amusing bard whose performance provided an ideal façade for her mental distractedness.

At a younger age, Ashlyn had heard of the Sunless Isle; most children of Star*port had heard at some point or another, from bards and the likes, tales of an enchanted city, marble white under the glow of moonlight and obsidian black when the sky is all dark, created and presided over by a most beautiful faerie queen. Like most children, she had adamantly believed in its existence for some time before learning the concept of fiction and dismissing all she heard of the place on such grounds.

The stories spoke mostly of sailors, lost or endangered by treacherous weather, inadvertently finding an entire city out at sea where there should only be open water. Most common were sightings, but there was even the occasional tale of alleged visits into the stone palace.
