Chapter 6

Ashlyn had an easier time finding her way back than she anticipated. In fact, given how quickly the journey took, she nearly hoped it would have been more difficult; that way, she would have had more time to calm down and gather her wits about her.

Inside, Myron was the first person she noticed. She was relieved at first, as she had partially believed Stelana's suspicions that he had remained inside after igniting the violet Veila pollen. But as she considered what played out, and the fact that he beat her back, the possibility of his abandoning her seemed all the more likely. Her relieved expression quickly transformed into a grimace.

"The fledgling returns," Ehren remarked. "Have a nice flight?"

Ashlyn glared at Myron and said nothing.

"What happened?" Larith inquired. "Myron said he lost you."

"He lost me, alright," Ashlyn muttered. "He lost me when he snuck in somewhere to steal and got us caught, then left me to fend for myself while he took off."

Ehren scowled. Larith hit Myron in an act of denouncement. Caelir's expression was, as most always, unreadable.

When Myron returned his focus to some stolen documents, making no move to reconcile her in any way, it was Ehren that acted. Rising to his feet, her caught her arm and led her outside.

"I'm sorry about Myron," he apologized. "That's just how he is. He's his own top priority. He takes full responsibility for successes, but none when things don't go so smoothly. Really, he's a self-centered jerk. But I'm sorry you had to find out that way. That wasn't fair."
