Chapter 5

Dade City, Florida Bonnie Groom let the limousine take her directly to the hotel when she left the meeting. She was angry; angry at Matthew Fox for coming up with such a cold-hearted scheme, and angry with herself for falling for the obvious scam. Bonnie lived in a senior citizen trailer park in Florida; consequently, she had always been wary of possible con artists. Not this time, though. This get rich quick schemed had almost seemed real. It actually had her going for a while. She had solved the crossword puzzle, just like all the others; when the message came back revealing that there was a plane ticket waiting for her at the airport, she was drawn even deeper into the lie. The ticket even bore her maiden name, which she began using only recently, after the death of her husband. Along with the email message and plane ticket came the promise of a bigger prize; a one million dollar prize.

Bonnie shook her head slowly. How could I have been so gullible? On the night she picked up the plane ticket, Bonnie dreamed of big money. She dreamed of financial freedom and the absence of bill collector phone calls; a result of the mountain of debt her late husband left as his legacy. She discovered the bills after his death, of course. The "business" trips to Atlantic City alone had racked up thousands on their credit cards. He was a gambler; she knew that and accepted it. The extent to which he was in the hole though, she had no clue. The crossword puzzle, and the possibilities that came with it, were her own personal light at the end of the tunnel. The almost giddy feeling of euphoria ended though, when she heard the terms of the "game." It was just too far fetched. It had to be a hoax. At least I had the good sense to leave before a camera crew showed up and announced that I was going to be on some funniest video show. Right away, Bonnie knew the game was not for her. She even had doubts about the hotel. The accommodations were just one more part of a free ride provided by a scam artist with a lot of money to burn. She wanted no part of it. Two hours after checking into the hotel, Bonnie called a taxi and headed back to the airport.
