Chapter 2

"Derrick, where have you been?! I've been calling your cell phone for over an hour", Paul spat out almost breathlessly.

"Mr. Brooks? This is Nurse Whitehead. Now stay please calm, but your son's been in a car accident" said the voice on the other end of the phone. Paul felt his knees buckle and leaned against the counter for support. Lilly looked up into his face and saw his reaction. She grabbed Paul by the elbow, not knowing if he really was going to fall to the floor.

"Now's he fine and just has some bumps and bruises. He's in the emergency room at….."

Paul shoved the phone to Lilly and ran to get the keys to the delivery van. By the time he pulled around to the front Lilly had her purse in her hand and jumped into the van before Paul could even bring it to a complete stop. She slammed the door and told Paul which hospital Derrick was in. Paul pushed on the emergency blinkers and the two of them drove in silence as Paul frantically navigated through the traffic. Lilly wanted to ask him to slow down but she kept quiet and tightly gripped her door handle. Paul ignored the horns blaring and profanities directed at him as he cut other cars off and ran through red lights. Lilly was shocked they didn't get into an accident or get pulled over.

When they finally arrived at the hospital, Lilly parked the van after Paul jumped out and ran through the emergency entrance doors. After getting directions from the nurse at the reception counter, he ran for the elevator. Once it came to a stop, the doors were barely open before he squeezed between them and ran down the second floor hallway until he found Derrick's room. He almost fell when he tried to slow himself to turn the corner into the door. Derrick was sitting on the side of the bed with a nurse putting a bandage on his forehead.
