Chapter 5 - Page 2 of 16

"Is there a woman involved in all this thing?"

"Any law against a man using one of these native women, sir." Jim hedged around trying to find out how much the Doc knew. Psychiatrist were that way, they would try to make you think they knew something they didn't. The Captain was almost as bad, but he did not have the training nor the temperament to bait a man like the Doc could.

It was kinda like Jim fishing for catfish; he knew what bait the fish would take, and he knew not to jerk the line too soon. Best of all, he knew only one time out of a million, a catfish would go for an artificial lure.

Jim did not want to, but he went back to Korea. It was early spring after a winter of defeat when the Chinese Communist drove back to the sea. Now they were on the advance again.

"Jim, there is usually no punishment for a soldier going to a native woman. Half of the men would be in the stockade if we punished. You can tell me what happened."

He was very cautious. It was only in desperation an officer called an enlisted man by his first name. "No sir, like every other American soldier over here, I am here to fight these Gooks. Any man says any different, he is lying."

"No one has said you were a traitor, Jim."
