Chapter 5

Char climbed out from under the trailer, stood up, all muddy and wet from the water. She looked at Elmore irritated and replied, "Go home Elmore, the money's safely tucked away where no one can find it." Elmore nodded that he understood and pretended to head back to his trailer. But as he saw Char going back inside, he cautiously walked back over to where she had been "burying her money" and wondered aloud to himself.."Hmmmm, and it just looked to me like she had a water leak. Money...hmmmm."

"Idiot" Char mumbled under her breath as she walked back inside. "Now just look at me, I'm a mess." She scraped off as much water and mud as she could and walked across the street to Ambies to ask to use her shower. Ambie readily agreed, for which Char was very grateful.

Later that evening, as Char came home from work, she saw her neighbors huddled in front of Elmore's trailer. "Hmmmm", she wondered to herself. "I wonder what they are up to?"

The evening continued to go as bad as the morning did. Char called a plumber and, "Just figures", she said aloud, "Can't come until Saturday." She again calls her new-found friend across the street and tells her what happened. Ambie assures her that she has full access to her water supply until she can get her plumbing fixed on Saturday. With one huge worry out of the way, Char's attention turned back toward the small crowd of men now gathered in front of Elmore's. They kept glancing over toward her place with earnest interest. Too tired to care, Char decided to walk over to Ambie's, to grab a final shower before turning in for the night.
