Biography: William Gilmore Simms (1806-70) was an American writer from Charleston, South Carolina. Known for historical romances featuring his home state, Simms wrote novels featuring different periods in American history, including Southern frontier stories like Guy Rivers (1834), tales of colonial times such as The Yemassee (1835), and Revolutionary war romances, including a series beginning with The Partisan in 1835 and ending with Eutaw in 1856. He also wrote poetry, short stories, local histories and biographies. A controversial personality, Simms held pro-slavery views and opposed the publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin.
