Biography: Victor-Marie Hugo (1802-1885) was a highly regarded French poet, novelist, playwright and essayist. Hugo was born during a dramatic period in French history, the rise of the First French Empire andNapoleon Bonaparte. Hugo spoke out against government policies like the death penalty and was exiled for many years, during which he wrote his famous novel Les Miserables. He is remembered also for the novel Notre-Dame de Paris, better-known in English as The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
