Biography: Best-known for his Sherlock Holmes detective stories, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a man of many talents. A doctor by training, Doyle served as a surgeon in the Boer War and was knighted for his service in 1902. His writings include historical fiction and nonfiction as well as poetry an science fiction, reflecting a growing interest in spiritualism later in life.
