Biography: American novelist Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Lewis studied at Yale, where he edited the literary magazine. Known for satires of middle-class American life, Lewis won critical praise for novels like Main Street (1920), which also established his commercial success. Other familiar titles include Arrowsmith (1925) and Elmer Gantry (1927).
