Biography: Samuel Richardson (1689-1761) was an 18th century English writer known for pioneering the novel in letter form. He began his career as a printer, but turned to writing in mid-life, after two marriages and 9 children. The first of his epistolary novels was, Pamela, Or Virtue Rewarded, which appeared in 1740 and was a huge success.
