Biography: Samuel Richardson (1689-1761) was an 18th century English writer known for pioneering the novel in letter form. He began his career as a printer, but turned to writing in mid-life, after two marriages and 9 children. The first of his epistolary novels was, Pamela, Or Virtue Rewarded, which appeared in 1740 and was a huge success.

    Pamela Andrews is a pious young girl, a waiting-maid in Bedfordshire. When the master of the house makes advances on her, Pamela resists, and writes to her parents for moral advice. Her letters show her persistence in protecting her virtue, for which she is richly rewarded in the end.
