| Biography: | English novelist R.D. (Richard Doddridge) Blackmore was known as the Last Victorian, a pioneer of the romantic fiction movement. Growing up in Berkshire, he was an outstanding student, which earned him a scholarship to Oxford University, where he first attempted to write a novel. Blackmore studied law after Oxford, and married Lucy Maguire in 1853. They settled in Teddington, where Blackmore was an avid horticulturist, maintaining an 11-acre fruit garden. His biggest success as a novelist was Lorna Doone (1869) which was extremely popular at the time and still is today. |
