| Biography: | Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte (E.D.E.N.) Southworth was a wildly popular American writer during the last half of the 19th century. Writing to support herself and her children, Southworth wrote serialized fiction for periodicals like The New York Ledger. The Hidden Hand (1859) was the most popular of these and became a successful book in 1888. Friends with Harriet Beecher Stowe, Southworth was also a supporter of women's rights. |
