Biography: A women's rights activist ahead of her time, Mary Johnston (1870-1936) was a successful American novelist. Combining romance and history, Johnston wrote of colonial Virginia, the French Revolution and 19th century politics. Her best-known and exceptionally popular work was To Have and to Hold (1900), which was adapted to film.
