Biography: Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1837-1915) was a popular British novelist who wrote dozens of Victorian romance stories. Born in London, Braddon worked as an actress before meeting John Maxwell in 1860. Although he was married at the time, his wife was absent and Braddon stepped in, eventually marrying him and having six children. She wrote over 70 novels, and is best-known for the sensational Lady Audley's Secret (1862) which has been made into a play and film several times.
