| Biography: | Margaret Wolfe Hungerford (1855-1897) was an Irish novelist also known as The Duchess. Married in 1872 to Edward Argles, she had three daughters before her husband died only 6 years later. Meanwhile, she wrote her first novels, Phyliss and Molly Bawn, which established her as a popular romance writer. One of the few Victorian women writers with a large family, Margaret married Thomas Hungerford in 1882 and had three more children, all the while writing best-selling novels. |
