Biography: Anonymous author, at first, of France's first historical novel, Marie-Madeleine Pioche de la Vergne (1634-1693) is better known as Madame de La Fayette. A Parisian of a wealthy family, she grew up among the courts and salons of the time. She married the Comte de La Fayette in 1655, and they settled in Paris where she published the famous La Princesse de Cleves (1678), known as the first true French novel.
