| Biography: | Leo Tolstoy was born in Russia and was the fourth of five children. He was brought up by relatives since his parents died when he was a child. He studied law but he was dissatisfied with the standard of the education and never accepted his degree. He accumulated gambling debts and decided to join his brother in joining artillery regiment. His military experience and travels were used as background in several of his novels as were his experiences later as an educator and father of 13 children. He believed in using ordinary events and characters as the basis of his research to add elements of war, religion and feminism to his novels. He is best known for his novel War and Peace (written in 1863-1869), an epic novel of 560 characters which told the story of five families during Napoleon's invasion of Russia. His other masterpiece was Anna Karenina (written in 1873-1877), a tragic love story. His last major novel was Voskresenia (written in 1899). His collected works, consisting of 90 volumes, was published in the Soviet Union in 1928-58. |
