| Biography: | American playwright Joseph R. Grismer (1849-1922) worked as an actor in Cincinnati and San Francisco before turning to writing, directing and producing. Collaborations and adaptations were his specialty, including a Civil War drama, The New South (1892) and his greatest success, Way Down East (1898), a rewriting of Lottie Blair Parker's Annie Laurie. |
