Biography: Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-1873) was an Irish author specializing in Victorian ghost stories, Gothic tales, and mysteries. Born into a family of playwrights and novelists, Le Fanu nonetheless pursued a degree in law from Trinity College before turning to writing himself. He is known for gothic horror classics like Uncle Silas (1864) and the vampire story, Carmilla (1872), which may have influenced Bram Stoker's Dracula 25 years later.
