Biography: Born Josef Teodor Konrad Walecz Korzeniowski in Russia in 1857, the author of such famous novels as Lord Jim (1900) and Heart of Darkness (1902) is better known by the name he took upon becoming a British citizen, Joseph Conrad. An ocean adventurer as well as a writer, Conrad was a master mariner before he began his career as a novelist. Conrad's stories combine realism and high drama to create a distinctive atmosphere for his characters, whether they find themselves lost at sea, negotiating high society, or embroiled in international politics.
