| Biography: | Ian Maclaren was the pen name used by Scottish theologian Rev. John Watson (1850-1907) for his romantic stories of small-town life in Scotland. Along with other members of the Kailyard School like J.M. Barrie and S.R. Crockett, Maclaren penned novels that celebrated the quaint, sentimental view of rural Scotland. He knew the countryside well, having traveled through Edinburgh, Perthshire, Glasgow and Liverpool in his ministry. His novels, such as Beside the Bonnie Briar Bush (1894) were extremely popular. |
