Biography: American novelist Henry Harland (1861-1905) was born in New York City and in his early years wrote sensational potboilers under the pseudonym Sidney Luska. Upon moving to London in 1890, however, Harland became involved in the Aesthetic movement, with its focus on the beauty of the arts. With Aubrey Beardsley and John Lane, Harlan published the influential literary arts journal, The Yellow Book. Harland later joined the Catholic Church, and wrote his most successful romantic novels on Catholic themes, such as the widely read Cardinals Snuff-Box in 1900.
