| Biography: | Henri Hendrik Conscience (1812-1883) broke ground by writing in Flemish, considered an unsophisticated language by many in the 1800s. In 1838 came his first great success with the historical romance, De Leeuw van Vlaanderen, or The Lion of Flanders. His later works include slice-of-life novels such as Blind Rosa (1850) and The Miser (1853). |
