| Biography: | French writer Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) is best remembered for his first novel, Madame Bovary (1857) and his meticulous writing style. Flaubert lived most of his life in his family home near the Seine and never married. He traveled and corresponded with a wide variety of literary friends, including Maxime du Camp, George Sand, and Emile Zola. He wrote continuously and carefully, although his efforts did not save him from scandal when Madame Bovary, with its attention to adulturous affairs, was published. |
