Biography: Gertrude Franklin Horn Atherton (1857-1948) was an American writer well-known for her California Series of romantic mystery novels and her best-seller, the controversial Black Oxen (1923), in which women's independence and sexuality were prominent. Atherton also wrote historical fiction, such as The Conquerer (1902), a detailed account of the life of Alexander Hamilton.
