| Biography: | Scottish author George MacDonald (1824-1905) is not well-known today, but in his time received praise from contemporaries C.S. Lewis, W.H. Auden, J.R.R. Tolkien and Madeleine L'Engle. MacDonald grew up in the Congregational Church and became a minister for a time before turning to fantasy novels and fairy tales. His most remembered works include The Princess and the Goblin, and Lilith. Literary acquaintances included Longfellow, Whitman, Tennyson, Dickens and Thackeray. |
