Biography: German writer Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué (1777-1843) was a romantic poet and novelist. He initially followed in his family tradition and joined the army, but focused on literature after his service. Married three times, he nonetheless wrote romantic tales of chivalry and true love. He is well-remembered for the fantasy tale, Undine (1811), which was extremely popular in the 19th century and has been translated into several languages.
